I t should not come as a shock that most business owners get into business with the aim of doing things a little better—they don’t set out to do things absolutely differently. I know I didn’t.

I was pitching security for ten years to people whose eyes were glazing over. Unless I could tell them about the time I spent a week working as Nicole Kidman’s bodyguard or something that was half interesting, they were going to fall asleep every time. But once I got to the place where I would talk about our new model and purpose—show them under the hood, so to speak—the question I asked them every time was “Have you ever heard of anybody in the security industry that operates like this?” When the answer was invariably no, I knew we were onto something.
